Is this about the Wolfman, Dracula, or maybe even Frankenstein? Not exactly, but close. But the book by Bruce Coville is great and the illustrations by Katherine Coville are amazing!

Here are some of the characters:
Russell Crannaker, 5th grade and the hero, and who soon turns into the Wolfman. (And that's just for starters!)
Eddie (with no last name, by the way), the bad guy, mean, and big, and punches Russell.
S. H. Elives, Prop., Magic Shop. "Old? Ancient was more like it."
Missy Freebaker, a friend.
Miss Snergal, a teacher.
The principal Mr. Henry Rafschnitz, The Beast of Boardman Road Elementary School.
And there are others, including two rats, Jerome and Roxanne, that talk!
Lastly, there's Mrs. Brown (talking to Russell), who had been teaching for forty years and was not so easily intimidated. "Young man, you leave this room this instant!"

Is there something different with these people (other than the rats, of course)? Well, most of the last names I can't even pronounce. And then there is Mrs. Brown. 1. Is she from the song "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" by the group Herman's Hermits? And 2. On page 49, Mrs. Brown looks exactly like Mrs. Doubtfire in the movie with Robin Williams.

Oh, by the way, Russell has wings (like Dracula)!

Finally, on the author's note, on the very last page, it says: "I'm often asked for the correct pronunciation of the name of the man who runs the magic shop. The answer is easy. Just remember that `Mystery lives!'". And it took me a while to get it, but I did it (finally). It is a perfect clue!

This was absolutely a terrific book!!! CLASSIC!

Really good read, exciting story, exciting, fun, truly wonderful book. Everyone would really enjoy reading this book and I recommend it.
He has to use this book for a reading journal and he has been keeping up with out me having to chase him down. Usually if he does not like a book it is a struggle to get him to sit down and do his reading but so far this has not been the case with this book.
Great for my 7 year old he thoroughly enjoyed the book, and nine more words are required for me to post.
Very happy with this book.I had been looking for this book for a while and jumped at the chance to pick up a copy when I found it here,I was going to give it four stars as it does show some wea but its not a new book so thats to be expected.I bet it looks just as good or better than the copy I used to have when I was young and that was my reason for buying this book, because I remembered it from my childhood.Thank you
I love these Magic Shop books-- both my 9 year old daughter and my 5 year old son gather around to hear them as bedtime stories. Bruce Coville is adept at capturing the elementary school angst along with entertaining stories full of magic and fantasy. Every chapter leaves my children breathless, begging me not to put it down and turn off the light.
I read it and loved it as a kid. Im glad that I remembered The Monsters Ring because now its one of my 7 year olds favorites. Its a little scary, a little thrilly and funny too. Quick read as well.
My 10 year old son does not like to read. Our school offers the AR program & he enjoys receiving the goodies & the fieldtrip if you reach your 9 wks goal & yearly goal. So he read this book to help him get points & he loved it. He rechecked this book out from the library 3 times. Then, he asked me to buy it for him. We were happy that we found it on . This is a good book & it is not scary despite the cover. A good book for boys who do not enjoy reading.
