That Boy Volume 1 Jillian Dodd Books

I purchased "That Boy" and "That Wedding" and they've been sitting on my TBR list for more than two years. I was waiting to read them until the third book came out, but it looks like I'll be eligible for social security before that happens so I decided to get reading. What a let down, I didn't enjoy this book at all, and I've already deleted the second book from my Kindle.

The book starts out when JJ is a child, and it ends when she's 22. In all those years, she never seems to mature, she still speaks in the same voice, like a 12 year old, and the older she got the more obnoxious it was. She goes from tomboy to boy crazy, constantly makes out with one of her BFF's, and is completely oblivious to the fact that her other BFF is in love with her (even though EVERY SINGLE PERSON around them can see it). Even when a really tragic event occurs in her life, it seems to affect her very little, and again she's worried more about her boyfriends than the tragedy.

Danny and Phillip are, of course, really hot and, of course, they are both attracted to JJ. Maybe if the author hadn't written her as an immature idiot I could have seen the attraction, but I was baffled. She's that bad!

I didn't appreciate the slut shaming in the book, (I really wish that trend would die already), but of course JJ holds tight to her virginity until 22, which seemed completely at odds with her behavior in the book. And of course it's fine that Danny and Phillip are hooking up with girls left and right.

At the end of the book, JJ gets engaged, and it's clear she is not anywhere near mature enough to take that step, not to mention they've only been actually dating for A WEEK.

The only redeeming quality in the book is the accuracy of how big Husker football is in Nebraska, it's practically a religion.

That Boy Volume 1 Jillian Dodd Books Reviews

Awful, just awful. It was an incredibly silly girl talking about her disdain for silly girls and how hot all the boys were. Including her "yummy" two best friends. Real girls with guy friends dont think like that. It just felt so forced and corny. More like a disney show with little to no actual depth. I cannot for the life of me understsnd how this series gets so many 5 star ratings. I have read so many books in the last year and this is the first 1star i have given. Very dissapointed.
4.5 stars! Well, I'm about 6 years later to the party but I finally read my first Jillian Dodd book. I was not dissapointed. That Boy was such a wonderful story with all the feels. This book wasn't just a romance. It sorta was a romance, but that really wasn't what the book was about. It was about LIFE and all the trials and tribulations that go along with growing up.

I'm not sure if a contemporary story can be considered "epic" but That Boy sure felt that way. It follows JJ and her two best friends, Phillip and Danny, from childhood until after college. They are fabulous characters that go through everything together over the years and are the constant and healthy support system in each other's life. Those three were so endearing, and I have so much love for them. How awesome is it to have someone in your life that always has your back no matter what?!

As you can tell, I absolutely adored this wonderful story. I listened to it on audio, and the narrator did a fantastic job. She really brought JJ to life. Her voice reminded me of Emma Stone so she was perfect for the narration.
First I’ll preface this review by saying that I did enjoy the book overall. There were parts of the story that had me hooked and I couldn’t put the book down. There is a huge tragedy scene that had me bawling my eyes out for pages upon pages, and I stayed up way later than I should have because I could not stop reading because I had to know what was going to happen, but then other scenes I almost gave up on the book entirely. I loved both male characters, Danny and Phillip, but their friendship kind of confused me. They are both charming, attractive, athletic guys who have the same girl best friend Jadyn. It is obvious that both guys have feelings for her throughout the book, and she bounced between the two, wondering what it would be like to date each one at different times throughout the span of the book, and both boys took it in stride, never getting jealous of each other or mad at her for bouncing between the two the entire book. However, I could not stand Jadyn. In the beginning of the story, she wasn’t so bad, and her antics and tantrums were normal for a young girl, and teenager, but as the book progressed into college and adulthood, it seemed as if Jadyn got even brattier, always complaining about something one of the boys did, mainly Phillip. Nothing ever seemed to be good enough for her. The ending honestly just pissed me off. The “first date” portion of the book was really sweet in my opinion, but Jadyn’s attitude toward the whole ordeal was just bitchy and very whiny ruining the ending for me. I do recommend this book if you are in the market for a clean, coming of age romance, but be prepared to be annoyed by the female lead.
