Ms Vandervort is an excellent story teller: the characters unfold for the reader; the story is plot driven with clear character motivation. Her descriptions are incredibly vivid, yet neither wordy nor drawn out. Her word choice is varied and visual. At first, I had a bit of trouble with the medieval names, but the story drew me in, pulled me along, and I quickly adapted to them. I can hardly wait to read the sequel.

Such an enjoyable read! Fantasy, strong female, a quest and a touch of mystery. So good!
Do you like your high-fantasy quest novels with tons of magic and lots of Hobbits? Look elsewhere, for Kim Vandervort's debut makes the fantasy quest to kill an ancient evil a woman-centric coming of age that rockets forward from the first page, keeping the supernatural to reasonable levels while concentrating on the relationships between the characters. Get in on the fun now this is just the first in a four book series to come.
Sheltered, naive Princess Ki'leah runs away from her courtly life to be with her lover, only to instead accidentally fall in with a motley group of heroes from a secret society who are out to save the world from an ancient evil. But was it an accident? Her upbringing as high princess has unwittingly prepared her with exactly the knowledge needed to solve the riddles that show how to defeat the evil Sorcerer-Goddess Lyarra. She joins the quest and truly comes into her own as a strong, brave, and thoughtful woman as she and her companions travel through a variety of ever more challenging settings and finally accomplish their goal.
This is terrific, straight up high-fantasy quest novel with a touch of romance that is appropriate for both YA and adult audiences.
I especially loved the strong female characters (Britta, the kickass swordswoman and scout, is a personal favorite), but really all the main characters were nicely drawn, each with their own consistent motivations and personalities. I also really liked the interesting magic system and the rich, creative world that Vandervort leads us through as the protagonists travel about on their quest. There were some interesting, nuanced reflections on fate and destiny, which is nice to find in a high fantasy novel. The pace was consistent and never dragged--Our Heroes were always kept moving to the next challenge or setting. It had a satisfying ending that wrapped up the current adventure and set some intriguing relationships in motion, and definitely left me wanting to know what happens in the next book.
If anything my only complaint was that I would have liked the book to be a little slower and more spread out. It seems like a rich world, and the plot sped us through a lot of interesting places and characters I would have liked more background on--but I can see how that would have slowed down the story too much, especially for the YA readers. So hopefully we'll get more background in the next book!
Gold Star Award Winner!
I enjoyed this book so much that I ordered the next one in the series the minute that I was finished with it. I even wrote to the author to congratulate her on a wonderful read. I haven't read high-quest fantasy in a long time; they just weren't very exciting anymore.
When I started THE SONG AND THE SORCERESS I was greatly surprised, because there were so many great characters! I loved the main character the most. Ki'leah is a princess of Si'vad. She is very naive and is walking away from her life as a princess. She is supposed to be getting married to a King whom she doesn't even know. She is running away to be with a bard of her court, Daelen. She goes the wrong way and is swept up with a band of men and women who are on a quest to stop an evil sorceress from waking up and wreaking havoc on their world.
On this journey, Ki'leah has the adventure of a lifetime and also matures into a young woman who will be able to rule her kingdom with cunning and wisdom.
The plot is good and very scary at times. There are some really amazing obstacles that the group must face, including sword fighting, riddles, very dark tunnels, magic, and just getting along with each other. The characters are very well drawn.
There are four very strong female characters. Ki'leah may be naive, but she is willing to learn and she draws upon her inner resources to face her enemies. Britta is the best. She is a butt-kicking warrior and scout. She is very likable and would be fun to hang out with. Then there is Sorrelle, a member of the Fey-Velahr, who is quiet but can use magic to help them at times when you would think all is lost. Then there is Llyrimin, who is a grieving widow and gives help even though she may put her own family in danger.
The men are great, also, but the unique difference to this is that these women are just as important as the men. There is also romance in this story, and I came to love some of the men because they were strong and treated the women like equals.
The only thing I would add to the book is a list of characters in the back with a pronunciation key and a little blurb about who they are. At times I would get a little mixed up. There are many names, which because they are different, are easily mixed up in my mind.
However, I really liked this book and can't wait to read the rest of the series!

I swore I was not going to enjoy this book, yet I found myself not only enjoying the story. I look forward to the next book the Northern Queen. This story was well written and was easy to read.
Fantastic, gripping. I had trouble putting it down. The story kept my attention all the way through. Best I have read in a long while.
I really liked this book. The picture on the front is nothing like I expected. One of the better books of that genre. A good story line and plot with lots of action that doesn't repeat the same scenario like many others do.
Ms Vandervort is an excellent story teller the characters unfold for the reader; the story is plot driven with clear character motivation.
Her descriptions are incredibly vivid, yet neither wordy nor drawn out. Her word choice is varied and visual. At first, I had a bit of trouble with the medieval names, but the story drew me in, pulled me along, and I quickly adapted to them. I can hardly wait to read the sequel.
